چکیده

We discuss the influence of large scale cosmic magnetic fields on the propagation of hadronic cosmic rays above 10 eV based on large scale structure simulations. Our simulations suggest that rather substantial deflection up to several tens of degrees at 10 eV are possible for nucleon primaries. Further, spectra and composition of cosmic rays from individual sources can depend on magnetic fields surrounding these sources in intrinsically unpredictable ways. This is true even if deflection from such individual sources is small. We conclude that the influence of large scale cosmic magnetic fields on ultra-high energy cosmic ray propagation is currently hard to quantify. We discuss possible reasons for discrepant results of simulations by Dolag et al. which predict deflections of at most a few degrees for nucleons. We finally point out that even in these latter simulations a possible heavy component would in general suffer substantial deflection.

Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Ray Propagation in the Universe

This paper summarizes recent developments in the study of the propagation of ultra-high energy cosmic ray protons or nuclei in the Universe, with emphasis on the consequences of energy losses and on the influence of extra-galactic magnetic fields.

Time Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation

Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...

Some Current Theoretical Issues around Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Rays *

We address some current theoretical issues around ultra-high energy cosmic rays. We recall that scenarios producing more γ−rays than cosmic rays up to high redshift can in general only provide a sub-dominant contribution to the ultra-high energy cosmic ray flux. This includes extra-galactic top-down and the Z-burst scenarios. Finally we discuss the influence of large scale cosmic magnetic field...

Propagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays

We briefly describe the energy loss processes of ultrahigh energy protons, heavier nuclei and gamma rays in interactions with the universal photon fields of the Universe. We then discuss the modification of the accelerated cosmic ray energy spectrum in propagation by the energy loss processes and the charged cosmic ray scattering in the extragalactic magnetic fields. The energy lost by the ultr...

The effect of highly structured cosmic magnetic fields on ultra-high energy cosmic ray propagation

The possibility that the magnetic field is strongly correlated with the large-scale structure of the universe has been recently considered in the literature. In this scenario the intergalactic magnetic field has a strong (μG) regular component spanning tens of Mpc but localized in sheets and filaments, while the vast voids in between are almost free of magnetic field. If true, this could have i...
